Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections caused by susceptible organisms in lower resp tract (eg, bronchitis, pneumonia), skin & soft tissue, upper resp tract (eg, sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis); acute otitis media. STD eg, uncomplicated genital infections due toΒ Chlamydia trachomatisΒ or nonmultiresistantΒ Neisseria gonorrhoeaΒ & chancroid due toΒ Haemophilus ducreyi. Alone or in combination w/ rifabutin for prophylaxis againstΒ Mycobacterium avium-intracellulareΒ complex (MAC) infection & in combination w/ ethambutol for disseminated MAC (DMAC).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderlyΒ Other indicationsΒ Total dose: 1,500 mg; 500 mg daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 then 250 mg daily for days 2-5.Β STD caused byΒ C trachomatisΒ orΒ susceptibleΒ N gonorrhoeaΒ & chancroid due toΒ H ducreyiΒ 1 g single dose.Β Prophylaxis against MAC infections in patient w/ HIV infections1,200 mg once wkly.Β In combination w/ ethambutol for DMAC infections in patient w/ advanced HIV infectionΒ 600 mg once daily.Β Childn >45 kgΒ Total dose: 30 mg/kg; 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days, or 10 mg/kg on day 1 then 5 mg/kg on days 2-5.Streptococci pharyngitisΒ Single dose of 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg for 3 days. Max: 500 mg daily.
