Cefuroxime
Indications/Uses
URTI eg, otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis & pharyngitis, lower resp tract infections eg, pneumonia, acute bronchitis & acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, GUT infections eg, pyelonephritis, cystitis & urethritis, skin & soft-tissue infections eg, furunculosis, pyoderma & impetigo, gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Most infections 250 mg bd. UTI 125 mg bd. Mild to moderate lower tract infections eg, bronchitis 250 mg bd. More severe lower tract infections or if pneumonia is suspected 500 mg bd. Pyelonephritis 250 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 1 g as single dose. Sequential therapy: Pneumonia Cefuroxime Na 1.5 g inj tds or bd IV/IM for 48-72 hr followed by cefuroxime axetil 500 mg PO bd for 7-10 days. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis Cefuroxime Na 750 mg tds or bd IV/IM for 48-72 hr followed by cefuroxime axetil 500 mg PO bd for 5-10 days. Children Most infections 125 mg bd, max dose: 250 mg daily. Children ≥2 yr Otitis media or more severe infections 250 mg bd, max dose: 500 mg daily.
